Groupe Derhane - Imidrane

Issouf, known as Issouf Derhane, was born in the peaceful village of Tidene almost a hundred kilometers northeast of Agadez. From a young age, Issouf was called by the desert winds, which carried him to Libya, a country where he grew up, forged by the trials and unique experiences of life. There, he witnessed the tumult of the civil war, an experience that sharpened his resolve and his understanding of peace.

In Libya, he discovered the guitar, an instrument which quickly became his refuge and his inner voice. Every note he played resonated like an echo from his soul, conveying tales of struggle, resilience and hope.

In 2015, when he finally returned to his country of origin, Niger, destiny had a decisive encounter in store for him. In Agadez, he met Mohamed, another guitar enthusiast. From their first exchanges, an unwavering connection was established between them, nourished by their shared love for music and their Tuareg heritage. Together, they founded the group "Derhane", quickly recognized as an essential pillar of the music scene.

Chiara Lee and freddie Murphy are sound artists and curators based in Torino, Italy.

Their musical practice involves experimenting on the duality of natural/synthetic, using acoustic recordings processed into synthetic sounds, as well as mimicking natural sounds using analogue tools.

Their approach to composition is bound to visual imagery and concepts linked to rituality.

About TERRA NOVA:
"After returning from my trip to Antarctica, I secluded myself in total silence for several days. The experience was so intense that coming back to everyday city life disoriented me, leaving me without any points of reference. I stared at the ceiling for hours, unable to move. After three months of constant light, seeing darkness again was shocking. Even in Antarctica, there were few points of reference; for kilometers, hours, and days, I saw nothing but an ice desert, impossible to look at without protective glasses due to the risk of losing sight. I sought silence and solitude, but I found only chaos and noise. For two months on an icebreaker, I didn't have a moment of silence. Initially, it's frustrating, but then you get used to it. The noise of breaking ice and the vibrations that spread through the ship's walls and cabins were comparable to a constant earthquake.

These emotions and visions led me to conceive the film in a highly experimental way. I tried to communicate to the musicians not so much a narrative line or an idea, but a real feeling, which they then masterfully translated into music. I worked with the music and sound design to convey the concept of alienation, trying to communicate through sounds the unknown and dark world of the ice desert, which still hides much beneath its surface. I wanted to express these concepts both with images and with sound and music.

What I remember very well is the feeling of being a guest in an immense, dangerous, and unknown place, where it is not the human being who commands, but nature.
