McPherson & Tetuzi Akiyama, Donald: Vinegar & Rum LP (New Zealand & Japanese Guitar Improv)
Donald McPherson & Tetuzi Akiyama: Vinegar & Rum (Bo'Weavil Recordings)
Improvised guitar music seems to have come of age recently, not that it hasn't been high up on the interests of discerning avant gardesters for aeons, but somehow it's seeped into the hearts and minds of the general public. We have big magazines wanting to write about how they always loved John Fahey and Loren Connors, fashion magazines covering the life and times of Jandek and Six Organs of Admittance playing major music festivals... well, maybe. Donald McPherson & Tetuzi Akiyama, however, continue the tradition quite effortlessly on this gorgeously packaged Bo-Weavil cd with lightly picked tangled guitar meanderings recorded to tape to give it that noisy saturated character we all love so much. These pieces are thoughtful and reflective, but not downbeat, they rouse the spirits and cleanse the soul much in the same way as Fahey might and show off the deft improvisational talents of the two virtuoso guitarists. A meeting of like minds from different cultures, 'Vinegar & Rum' is a triumphant collaboration.
